Microscope Inspection for Tape & Reel Components: How to Choose the Right Video Microscope

Many tiny electronic components are packaged in tape and reel. During production, incoming goods, or warehousing, random inspections or full inspections are required to check for defects such as appearance damage, surface contamination, scratches, and other imperfections.

As a standard inspection tool, microscopes are widely used on production shop floors. As shown in Figure 1:
- The first row shows finished components in tape and reel.
- The second row shows inspection using a conventional ring light, where the protective film on the tape causes strong reflections.
- The third row uses side lighting, which clearly reveals white foreign particles on the component surface.
Three Key Factors for Selecting a Video Microscope
1. Lens Zoom Range
This determines magnification and field of view.
- 30X–200X electronic magnification is suitable for the microelectronics industry.
- 200X–2000X is designed for semiconductor applications.

2. Industrial Camera
2MP and 8MP (4K) cameras are the mainstream configurations. USB models offer broad compatibility.
Beware of falsely inflated pixel specifications using interpolation — such exaggerated numbers provide little practical value.

3. Lighting Configuration
Different lighting angles produce drastically different imaging results. Common methods include brightfield, darkfield, and auxiliary directional lighting, depending on the application.
As shown in the side-by-side comparison in Figure 1, adjusting the light angle completely changes inspection clarity.
Modern industrial video microscopes also support image capture and precision measurement functions.
