High-Precision Micro Inspection Solution for MLCC

1. What is MLCC?
MLCC stands for Multi-Layer Ceramic Capacitor. It is manufactured by stacking ceramic dielectric films with pre-printed internal electrodes in an offset arrangement. The stacked structure undergoes one-time high-temperature sintering to form a ceramic chip, and metal outer electrodes are then plated on both ends of the chip. Thanks to its monolithic internal structure, MLCC is also known as a monolithic capacitor.

2. Common Visual Defects and Root Causes of MLCC
-
Broken internal electrodes / corner chipping: Partial fracture or edge missing of internal electrodes. This defect directly causes open circuits and reduced capacitance performance.
-
Jagged and frayed internal electrode edges: Caused by defective electrode screen printing. Irregular electrode edges lead to electric field concentration, which further induces internal cracks and dielectric breakdown.
-
Undersized or intermittent electrode layers: Insufficient electrode thickness and discontinuous coating result in unstable electrical conduction and poor long-term operational reliability.
-
Electrode bridging (interlayer short circuit): Connection between adjacent internal electrodes. It triggers direct short circuits and even burnout of circuit boards and electronic devices.
-
Oxidized, blackened and impure electrodes: Internal electrode oxidation and embedded impurity particles lead to abnormal resistance values and premature aging failure.

3. Professional Inspection Methods for MLCC Defects
To tackle frequent MLCC failure risks, Huaxian Optics provides a full-set microscopic inspection and failure analysis workflow, covering visual microscopic inspection, metallographic cross-section analysis, SEM and EDS compositional testing.
3.1 MLCC Surface Visual Inspection
Inspect surface cracks, shell damage and standardized solder joint morphology. After cleaning solder joints with board wash solvent, technicians will check for conductive foreign contaminants that cause circuit failure.
Core Equipment: Stereo Microscopes / Video Microscopes
3.2 Metallographic Cross-Section Failure Analysis
The workflow includes precise sampling, surface polishing and microscopic imaging. The interface between ceramic dielectric and metal internal electrodes can be clearly identified with sub-micron resolution. It supports accurate detection of microcracks, internal voids and interlayer delamination that cannot be captured by ordinary visual inspection.
Core Equipment: Precision Sampling Machine, Polishing Machine, Metallographic Microscope
3.3 SEM & EDS Compositional Analysis
Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) matches Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) to conduct component analysis on intermetallic compound (IMC) structures and detect ionic pollutant elements inside defective MLCCs. It locates invisible chemical-induced failure causes.
Core Equipment: SEM, EDS Spectrometer
